Herbs, lettuce, tomatoes or even strawberries. It is possible to grow vegetables and fruits at home, even in a small apartment located in the center of a big city. Taking advantage of the flower pots or the small balconies is enough to have an “edible” garden inside or outside the house, and also a practical way of having organic and fresh products always at hand.

What should you grow in a family garden? Landscaper Jose M. Blas in an interview with AD magazine gives some simple tips on vegetables that can be grown indoors and outdoors.

Outdoor crops

If we have a balcony or terrace, we can plant vegetables, such as zucchini, strawberries, cucumbers or tomatoes, that require sunlight. Lettuces, chard, leeks or radishes, for example, prefer cooler spaces with less sun exposure.

The important thing is to decide what we want to grow, what is the appropriate summer season, study the best time to plant, as well as the ripening times. For example, we can plant lettuce throughout the year, but in the case of zucchini, the best time is spring. If we make a cultivation schedule, we can get more out of our small garden, “says the expert.

Indoor crops

It will be necessary, first of all, to find a sunny place, near a window and with good ventilation. With dedication, says José M. Blas, it is possible to grow some micro-vegetables and aromatic herbs, such as basil, coriander, thyme or parsley. For the more ‘nostalgic’, he says, there is always the classic way of putting a vegetable in a glass jar with cotton.
