This new 11-story, 230-apartment building in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan stands out for the versatility of its furnishings. Designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingel Group) with former Apple and Tesla engineers, it offers a space enhancement system with modular wooden furniture, such as the bed, desk or storage, which is moved up to the ceiling with a robotic system by voice control.

The first five apartments of The Smile, a new mixed-use housing block in New York, which has 163 market-rate apartments and another 70 reserved for low- and middle-income residents, for affordable rent, already have a system high-tech robotic system that stores the furniture on the ceiling. The use of a home depends on the cubic meters, not the square meters.

This modular furniture system allows you to optimize the space of these small apartments. The ceiling has beehive-shaped grids where different pieces of furniture such as the bed or storage cabinets are ‘stored’, depending on the use made by each user at that time.

The furniture features handcrafted wooden furniture, plus a modular system equipped with voice control, allowing users to execute it with spoken commands. Users can ask the system to lower the bed when they are ready to go to sleep, or to raise it once they wake up.
